The Clappers.
People that clap after an airplane has landed are terrible. I am not talking about the plane that keeps bouncing 1,000 feet from turbulence and the pilot propels the plane smoothly onto the runway like a feather landing on a park bench. I am talking about the people who clap after landing for no other reason other than to pursue an act of self reassurance. I strongly dislike the Clappers. It’s not like the pilot can hear you; since 9/11, the door to the cockpit was reenforced with steel. If you feel the need to thank the pilot for ‘saving your life’ from that flight, he is usually hanging out outside the cockpit as you deplane. Again, I am not talking about the people who clap after a rocky flight (though, that seems ridiculous for the same reasons). Clappers are terrible.

Francis Ford Coppola spent three years filming Apocalypse Now (one of my two favorite films along with Fellini’s 8 1/2). The work print that Coppola assembled was 5 1/2 hours, and contained many interesting segments that were cut out of the film. Many of these would resurface in the reedit, Apocalypse Now Redux in 2001. One of the more interesting scenes cut from the film was a reading of T.S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Men” by Marlon Brando. I can completely understand why this was cut from the film, even though it is wholly appropriate to the tone and themes of the film and is interesting in its own. Regardless, it is still a beautiful rendition of the poem. This isn’t the scene from the film, but it is a creative visual presentation of the recital.

This is an interesting article reporting on a cocaine bar in La Paz, Bolivia. It is the only one of its kind in the world. I had heard about this from other travelers, but had never read about it or met anyone who has been. It sounds like a very dangerous destination, or at best, “shady”.

It doesn’t get more amazing than this:
In the 1970s, network television had even less respect for their viewers than they do today. In 1979, a show called Supertrain premiered. It would only last 9 episodes. It was about a futuristic train that was nuclear powered and could travel from NYC to LA in 36 hours. The train contained a mall, exquisite restaurants, and every other luxury you could want. The producers had attempted to model the show after The Love Boat with episodes being about various passengers.
It really must be seen to be believed:
And here is the first part of the first episode:

It appears, even the Avatar’s were not able to fend off Cultural and Economic Imperialism on their home planet:

I have no desire to see this tragic film now.
